'I cannot go to school today, '
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
'I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I'm going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I've counted sixteen chicken pox
And there's one more-that's seventeen,
And don't you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut-my eyes are blue-
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke-
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button's caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained,
My 'pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb.
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is-what?
What's that? What's that you say?
You say today is...Saturday?
G'bye, I'm going out to play! '

Very funny poem. i think that hte author really thought of every sickness and every pain that is humanly posible to get as a sickness. it is very funny and i laughed the whole poem.
ReplyDeleteHi! This poem is very funny because it is just a excuse for the Peggy Ann McKay not to go to school and then when she figures out that it is Saturday she say's "G'bye, I'm going out to play. Shel Silverstein is one of my favorite author's. I got introduced to his wonderful work by my aunt ammanda, who lives in glendale,ny, because one day I went over to her house and we hung out and went to Borders to look at some books and she went over and took out a book of his and showed it to me and then I discovered his beautiful work.
ReplyDeleteThis poem rhymes alot, I believe ever line in the poem rhymes. I have never in my life read a poem that rhymed so much. If I could rate this poem from 5 to 10 I would give it a 10!
ReplyDeleteThis poem is also halerious. I think that it would be amazing if someone realy did have all of those promblem, I think if someone had those problems that, that person would look a mess!! If I ever pulled a prank like that my mom would take my tempature bring to the Doctor and if I was lyeing all of my eletronics would be taken away.I am also wondering what the heck is the intasmatic the bird flu and other types of flues but not the !! I mean I heard about the swine flu and the other flus but not the intasmatic is very unfamiliar to me. I believe that I am going to search for the intasmatic flu to see if it is real or not. Well i searched everwhere I searched bing google and even Answer.com. So then the intasmatic flu must not be real because it is one none of the .com's that deal with searching for something. My favorite line in the poem is my apendix pains ever time it rains. The reason why it is my favorite is because the line is funny and how in the world can your apendix pain if it rains, I think it would be carzy if that could really hapen. Well these are all my thoughts about the poem. This poem was just outstandinling teriffic.
I like this poem but I think I heard of this poem before.I wonder what would happen if this girl had all the problems that he said he had? I think this girl would have died. I feel bad for the girl because she already used this lie to get out of school but she found out that it was Saturday so she went out to play she must be saying ya,ya,ya it looks like she is feeling a whole lot better if she can go out and play
ReplyDeleteThis peom is very cute it is just like my sister and she is always trying to find a way to stay home and watch disney channel or go on my labtop and play on my cellphone or just play a prank on me I jujst Hate it when she stays home it is very funny when she does pull a prank on me i just think she is the most mean little girl in humanitiy. Also this poem reminds me of when i got the flu and my temperature and every time mom tried to feel it i would actually make her say ouch everytime she touched my head. Also i hated staying i inside all day hearing children in my neighberhood laugh and play tag even my birthay had to be on hold until thursday man I hated being sick all you do is you stay in bed.

ReplyDeleteThe pome was sick
ReplyDeletei think the pome was fgood
ReplyDeletevery funny poem. I'd feel really bad if one of my family members was sick that bad. I hate being to because you can't go outside to play with your friends and you can't play your game. My mom says if your to sick to go to school your to sick to play the game which is really messed up because it's kind of hard to not get sick.
ReplyDeleteIt was very funny. My favorit part was when someone said it is Saterday. Like when Richard said he had the Flu I remembered when I had it to.
ReplyDeleteThat poem makes me in pain, now. I don't want to stay home, I want to stay in school, learn in school and work in school.

ReplyDeleteThis poem also reminds me of when I was sick to. The difference of when I was sick was that it was real and i did not have all of those problems, plus I do not think that you can have all of those things going on in your body.
ReplyDeleteI have a questoin for the author, can anyone be this sick? If so why this kid? I would also like to say that my brother trys to make up excsisses to not go to school.Like one time he said that I beat him up and that he couldn't move. That was a total lie! i think that the author might have been this kid and or just had kids of his own.I think that the poem is verty funny iI would like to probly like to read more of her poems. Shel is a very talented writer and I think that I have read some of her books. This reminds me of a book by Jim Benton. He wrote the Franny K. Stein books, he also wrote the Dear,Dumb Diary books.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Mesnick I can not wait for you to find a new poem. Mrs. Mesnick how do you you find all of these great poems, if you can, can I get the website because I would really want to read some of those poems!

ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! If all that is happening to Ann McKay she shoud be in the hospital! I can relate to Ann though. I know how it feels to be so much pain and you just wish you could be well again. EVERY time I get sick for some reason my throat does'nt hurt only my tonsils, and I can't eat food that easily.I cant even eat noodles! Also my ears, tonsils, head, stomach, fingers, toes, feet, hands, jaw, legs, and ect. hurt! I feel really bad for Ann McKay!
ReplyDeleteAdrianna- Shel Silverstein is fantastic! He has so many books in the library.
