***Note to parents- For the month of December I plan on posting a poem about each of the 3 major holidays celebrated in December. No particular attention will be paid to one over the other, nor am I soliciting the celebration of them. I would like the children to look at them from a personal standpoint and from a historical standpoint. Please contact me directly if any concerns arise. ***
Happy Hanukkah
Outside, snow is slowly, softly
Falling through the wintry night.
In the house, the brass menorah
Sparkles with the candlelight.
Children in a circle listen
To the wondrous stories told,
Of the daring Maccabeans
And the miracles of old.
In the kitchen, pancakes sizzle,
Turning brown, they'll soon be done.
Gifts are waiting to be opened,
Happy Hanukkah's begun.

Hello Students!
ReplyDeleteFor this weeks poem, I would like to pose a few focus points, you may choose to do one or all of them:
1. Look at the poem and compare and contrast it to your life personally.
2. Look up unfamiliar words in the dictionary or "google" them, and explain their meaning
3. Choose a line that "resonates"-means something to you- and EXPLAIN how
***I am looking for DETAILED comments. Just posting a sentence is not enough! Remember you have a WEEK to think about this!
hi. i wonder what a menorah is because it seems important to the holiday of hanukkah. im going to google it. a menorah is a specialized candleholder that jewish people use.there are 2 types; one with six or seven branches and one with 9 branches. the one with 9 branches is the one used to celebrate hanukkah. the menorah consists of a central stalk as a base and sometimes a candle holder shooting up from it and then it has 3 other candle holders on each side of the base. i also wonder what a maccabean is.all i found was the definition for the word maccabees . i hope this is the same definition.maccabees were a jewish rebel army who liberated parts of the land of isreal from the rule of the seleucid empire. the name macabee came from the judas and his 4 brothers. they were leaders in the maccabean revolt. the story telling in the poem reminds me of christmas when i read stories to my sister and hear stories from family members. i have read her codouroy's first christmas and have seen a lot of christmas movies with her such as a christmas carol [ the old one ], miracle on 31st street and many others that i can't list or i'll bore you to death. the first line reminds me of when winter first starts and it snows a lot. i like the line sparkles in the candlelight because it reminds me of my mother's twinkling eyes whenever i look in to them they are always sparkly and shiny. i am finally done and can't wait to finish my other assignments.
ReplyDeleteThere was a line in the poem that reminded me of something and the line was slowley softly falling through the wintry night. The something it reminded me of is when I am in my house in the porch looking at the snow slowly come down to the ground. The poem also makes me feel like I am there watching write know the snow softly go down the author is extremly briliant with that. There is something i want to know and that something is what is a menorah. Well i am going on google to find out because I really want to know.Well i just went to google and a menorah is a seven stick candle holder. The menorah is also one of the oldest jewish faith. The menorah is also considered a symbol of the nation of israel. Well i am done telling the anctient history of menorahs lets move on to why the jewish light the menorah. One purpose is to give the miracle to one family, you must light the menorah after nightfall or when it is dark outside. Well that is all I can give you on lighting the menorah. Did you know without Hanukkah there would be NO Christmas. Hanukkah is known for there feat and dedication.Well know i am done talking about the menorah and how you light it and why you light it. Mrs Mesnick I searched everywhere to find out what maccabeans are. i am dieing to know so if any of you can tell me what it means i would be so grateful.
ReplyDeleteAdrianna i love your poem. you put so much thought to your poem. I love how you wrote about things you never know that was in the poem. Like the work menorah but then you found out that it meant the eight candles that you light, if you are Jewish
ReplyDeleteKayla-
ReplyDeleteread Adrianna's post about the Maccabeans. Also, what do you mean when you say without Hanakkuh there would be no Christmas?
Ladies- proofread before you post! If you are going to post a really long entry, make sure you leave time to go back and check your work. If you don't have a lot of time, write a shorter amount and then go back later and add to it in another comment.
And remember that the "i" by itself if suppose to be a capital- I

ReplyDeleteMrs. Mesnick what I said is really true. There would asbsolutly be no Christmas without Haukkah.I know you are wonering how do youi know so I will tell you. When I went on google search and typed how are hanukkah and Christmas alike they told me that there would be no Christmas without hanukkah. Also Mrs Menick next time I will proofread more carefully. Thankyou for the note, the note you gave me will really help me next time when I write my blogpost.
ReplyDeleteRichard you did a typo, if I was you I would start proofreading
ReplyDeleteThis poem reminds of a play in 3rd grade where I saw a menorah shining bright shining because the were celabrating 8 days of Hanukkah.
ReplyDeleteJoy you did a typo. You need to stop writing so fast. Also I need to stop writing so fast because I just made a mistake.
ReplyDeleteI love when you first open the gifts becuase they just make me want jump all day
ReplyDeleteDevin your comment is really good. I love how you connected a Menorah to school.
ReplyDeleteGood job Devin keep up the great work.
kayla you need to proof read again! I remember that play Devin.I think it was something about skinheads.
ReplyDeleteKayla thankyou for the post and Adrianna that was a very good play. The part I like the most was when they stopped the skinheads from taking over there town. Adrianna I think the play was in Montana.
ReplyDeleteThis poem reminds me of when ever it snows my sister,my brother and I hope it sticks because we love to play in the snow but we hate shoveling,it dosen't matter though because we don't have a choice! It also reminds me of how much I love stories and pancakes!(with suryp of course!!!)Finally I like the way the poem is written because it talks about some of the things poeple do on Hanukkah.
ReplyDeleteI like this poem because it reminds of my cousins their juish.I also like that it talks about different colchers holiday.Deven what is skinheads.
ReplyDeleteI like the poem ilike pankakes there really good i espeacily like what you wrote adrianna

ReplyDeleteThanks for the meaning of the maccabeans Adrianna. I didn't know that a maccabeans are this big army type thing. If you don't read this its ok.
ReplyDeleteElijah you did a typo. Why would you comment about pancakes!!
ReplyDeleteInesh that connects to my life to because I really cant's wait too when it is Christmas and jump up and down to when I see the presents I got. On the other hand I would wish you talked more about the poem than opening presents on Christmas
ReplyDeleteNo hard feelings
Tierra I love the comments you wrote. Keep up your outstanding work!!
ReplyDeleteP.S I am sorry I haven't been writing to you so much.
This poem reminds me of Christmas and all the great times I had with my them.
ReplyDeleteAdrianna keep up the great work on your comments you are doing so good.
Adrianna keep up the great work on your comments.
ReplyDeleteRichard- Why does it remind you of the day after your birthday? And I didn't know you were jewish!
ReplyDeleteJoy- The poem is about Hanukkah not Christmas (as you said in your first post) Can you look up what a jewish pancake is called? and give us some details!
Kayla- you still haven't answered my question, Why would there be no Christmas without Hanukkah? They are two SEPARATE religious holidays. How are you finding that they are intertwined?
Devin- I remember that play. I loved it too! It was called, "The Town That Fought Hate" and it was a true story.
Inesha- Can you elaborate and add more details? And you repeat the same feeling in your second post. Can you think of something else or provide more details?
Tyler- Nice relating the poem to your family!
Tierra- Nice thought out post! Keep up the good work!
Elijah- Can you look up what a jewish pancake is called and give the group some details?
Adrianna and Kayla- Let's keep up the great POSITIVE comments, leave the proofreading up to me. It can come off condescending! We have to remember that we are all unique and make mistakes. We need to respect and encourage our classmates, not point out faults because nobody is perfect!
Mrs. Mesnick thank you for the post I still want to know where the play was. I think the play would make a good movie if they added a little more detail and scenes. It would be really cool if we could see the again this year.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Mesnick thankyou for the post. I will try to work on that.
ReplyDeleteMrs mesnick I know you are dieing to know how there would be no Christmas without Hanukkah so I will fully explain how I know. Go on google.com and then search for There would be no christmas without Hanukkah and they will tell you what you want to know.
Did you know hanukkah is the feast of dedication. they especially like yo eat jelly doughnuts and potatoa pancakes
OK Mrs.Mesnick. The pancakes they eat are called latkes originally made of cheese they grew to be made and eaten with anything you like. They also eat hole-less jelly doughnuts called sufganiyot. This food sounds delicious except the jelly doughnuts. I hate jelly doughnuts!
ReplyDeleteMrs. Mesnick if you want to know how there could have been no Christmas without hanukkah go to googe.com and search for there would be no Christmas without Hanukkah.
ReplyDeleteKayla you need to also proof read your work because I read your post and you made a couple of mistakes.
ReplyDeleteHey, Kayla you doing are doing a stupendous yourself!!! Also you don't have to be sorry at all! How about I respond to you and you can respond to me if you want to.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Mesnick do know the set of the play? When I say set I mean what state and town did the story take place in.
ReplyDeleteDevin- I found a website that discusses the book "The Christmas Menorahs: How a town fought hate" by Dr. Janice Cohn
ReplyDeletehttp://www.drjanicecohn.com/play.htm
The play was set in Billings, Montana in 1993.
***To all my students, I am so impressed with all of you! Keep up the great work on this blog! It is very exciting to write to you!
I wonder if hanukkah and qunza originated from the same culture because they both have menorahs don't they. Also when they mention menorah it reminds me of when me and my family went to the church the church to have a feast and the man who was hosting the faest lighted the menorah.
ReplyDeleteHey everyone i gust wanted to tell everyone to have a great christmas and a happy new year!@!! mrs.mesnick i looked up the jewish pancake thing.it is a laktas. it is kinda like a a fried patato that looks like a pancake. my grandma got the resipee online and made some they tast very good. you should try it.

ReplyDeleteMrs.Mesnick I can not find how there would be nol Christmas without Hanukkah. I will try my best because I really want to get a good grade on this, I will try a few more times, maybe if I read a little slower I will be able to explain more.
