I Meant to Do My Work Today

I meant to do my work today-
But a brown bird sang in the apple tree,
And a butterfly flitted across the field,
And all the leaves were calling me.

And the wind went sighing over the land
Tossing the grasses to and fro,
And a rainbow held out its shining hand-
So what coud I do but laugh and go?

-Richard LeGallienne

  1. This poem is great. Only the first and the Fourth line ryhmes. this opoem reminds me of in the summer because the birds are flying and the butterflies are too. My favorite line in this poem is a butterfly flitted across the field.

  2. hi!this poem reminds me of fall because it says ; all the leaves were calling me and the wind was sighing over land tossing the grass to and fro.i disagre with kayla. it always reminds me of when i went to soons' orchard one year and heard a bird chirping but i didn't see it . it also sounds like a beautiful day .

  5. I like the poem because it reminds me of my favorite season, fall. I never saw a brown bird. I'm not sure. Where I live, we don't see a lot of apple trees. Rainbows, I see once or twice. I think poem means we should do our homework, but never forget not to.

Can someone tell me how I get to the site where the poems are we're suppose to use to write about and illustrate? I want to have my homework done for Monday, but I don't know what I'm suppose to do. Can someone help me? Pleeaasseee...anybody.

  13. Wow, great analysis by Kayla, Adrianna and Tyler. I like how you give some detail to your thoughts and make them more than one sentence.
Inesha, Richard and Elijah- Can you give a line or a detail of why you think the poem is descriptive, the fall season, or relaxing. Those one line answers are not going to be enough for this assignment.
Tierra- I like how you quote a line, could you tell me why that is your favorite line? (I know you had some trouble with posting)

    Keep up the great work!
Here is another idea to think about...
Tyler said that he thinks this poem is about "doing our homework"- does anyone else think the poem has something to do with doing (or not doing) homework?

***And please proofread your posts before you put them up!!!!

********And I am waiting to hear a great response from Devin and Joy!

  15. I think that the author really foucused on explaining all the nature.
If he meant to do his work , he should not be wanting to go outside. If he could explain all theese things he would probley be able to do his work.

  16. Birds chirping, butterflies flitting, leaves blowing, and rainbows calling....there is no way with all those beautiful visions and sounds could I ever get my work done! This sounds like a perfect day!

"So what could I do but laugh and go"
Do you think the author did his work? Or did he skip off to play outside?

Have any of you ever "daydreamed" when you should have been doing your work?

  29. i think that the author did not give a reasonible reason for not doing his homework, but you got to give him some slack if it was a second grader tealing me this i would belive it bot if it were someone my age [i am 10] would not belive them as much.i think that he just did not want to do it or he forgot.
